The Universal Imperative of Improvement: Objectivity

“There are two start-up trends that are sweeping Silicon Valley and beyond: one, says Tim Ferriss, needs to be redefined, and the other needs to be more widely activated. The first has gained so much popularity it has become a motto: ‘fail fast, fail forward’. Ferriss is concerned that we’re fetishizing failure as something harmless that only leads upwards, when in reality in some industries it can be quite deadly.”

— Tim Ferriss: Stop Demonizing Failure by VWArticles

There is one way the current failure fetishizing of start-up and motivation gurus can be safely contained and even capitalized upon: maintenance of meta Objectivity.

When starting a process it is crucial retain a certain amount of objectivity about the entire undertaking. Failure definitely shouldn’t be celebrated, but it also shouldn’t be dwelled upon. It should be understood from an objective scientific point of view, the reasons for failure should be understood and remembered, and corrections should then be made and the process should move forward.

For all lifters misses are going to happen. You are going to work up to a weight you can’t overcome for some reason(s). Reasons can be physical, mental, psychological, and/or technical, etc. It is important to take a meta conscious approach and stand above all of this and objectively identify the reason for the miss and correct it.

Do not celebrate the miss, it is always better to be successful; but future success is only helped by learning from the current failure, so unnecessary dwelling on the miss is not productive either. Pure objectivity gives you a bird’s eye view of it all, even to your own subjective experience.

This is the meta state of the highest achievers.
